Soldier Pile Shaft

Soldier pile shafts are used for large, deep excavations where a large working area is required below grade. These shafts are installed by drilling and sinking I-beams or concrete piers around the proposed excavation and driving steel plates between the beams. The ground is excavated as the plates are installed. Timber is often used in Soldier Pile Shafts as an entry or exit portal for trenchless construction. For extremely large and complex shafts, concrete walls may be poured in place for the shaft walls.
